...fall seems to be only a matter of how Coach Farrell will run his men. Should N. P. Hallowell '32 run in this one event he is capable of shading this mark, having a 4.25 mile to his credit in the K. of C. meet. Last year David Cobb '31 won this event, and conserved his energy sufficiently to take a first in the 1,000-yard as well. There is a possibility therefore that Coach Farrell will run Hallowell in the 1,000, or two-mile, depending upon how the tide of victory is swinging. Levering, star Cornell...
...Crimson will have a decided edge in all the longer runs. David Cobb '31, unheralded double victor of last year in the 1000-yard and one-mile runs, will be back. This year he is entered in the mile and two mile runs. In the latter, he will face stiff competition from Levering, of Dartmouth, who beat J. L. Reid '29 to the tape last year in the time of 9 minutes, 41 2-5 seconds. Cobb and N. P. Hallowell '32 should take the first two places in the mile run hands down...
...nature is made clear. There is Pollack who goes crazy and is shot. There is the ensign in command, a little fellow just out of Annapolis, with a pathetic courage and a dormitory sense of duty, who faces death by recalling the heroic memory of John Paul Jones. Cobb likes girls and Costello likes liquor and the radio operator is a sarcastic fellow. In the effort to keep sane under terrible pressure some minds infect themselves deliberately with tiny manias. One sailor hangs onto a Chinese vase-he wants to save that-and another whittles a boat...
Harvard placed second to Bates in the grilling two-mile relay, with Holy Cross finishing a poor third. W. C. Rowe '31, J. W. Fobes '32, David Cobb '31, and N. P. Hallowell '32 comprised the local contingent. The formidable Holy Cross threat was removed when Hegarty, Purple leadoff man, fell on the first turn. The last race, between Hallowell and Russell Chapman, Garnet anchor man, was nip-and-tuck all the way. In the last stretch Chapman, with his superior experience, forged ahead and won by four yards. The time was 8 minutes 2 4-5 seconds...
...real battle in this contest will be between the University runners, and Boston College, with the Eagles, undefeated thus far this season, slightly favored. Although Coach E. L. Farrell has not yet definitely announced his lineup for this race, with such stellar distance men on his squad as David Cobb '31, N. P. Hallowell '32, J. W. Fobes '32, and G. N. Barrie '32, he should be able to pick a quartet which will force the Boston runners to their utmost...
