...plane had been reported -- a broken floor light. The crash was fierce enough to cause most of the plane to disintegrate into pieces small enough to be held by hand. "There's not one body that's intact," said a firefighter at the scene. The flight data and cockpit recorder were both recovered...
...That leaves little to explain the tragedy except a "bump" -- a sudden airspeed increase detected by the plane's flight-data recorder. Wind has been ruled out, since only a 7-m.p.h. breeze was evident that evening. And earlier reports of the cry "Traffic!" on the cockpit voice recorder have proved false. So what was it? Some aviation experts speculate that the bump in the sky may have been caused by the air turbulence created by the jet that preceded Flight 427 into Pittsburgh International Airport...
...Cockpit voice recordings released by the Federal Aviation Administration showed that Greenlee and Hayes got two wind shear warnings but both missed an all-points wind shear alert just seconds before the crash...
Federal investigators said engine parts from Flight 427 indicate a potential cause of the accident: one or more of the components called "actuators," which help slow the plane's movement, may have been set off without a command from the cockpit. That action could have inappropriately reversed the thrust of the engines, causing the plane to roll off into a dive. The actuators are normally deployed to slow a plane down only after landing. USAir records show a flight crew reported problems with the plane's reverse thrust two and a half months earlier...
...black boxes containing the pilots' cockpit conversation on doomed US Air Flight 427 were recovered today, and investigators hope the devices reveal more about the bizarre crash that claimed 132 lives. The jetliner en route from Chicago to Pittsburgh crashed at 7:15 P.M. yesterday. The Boeing 737 was approaching the airport to land when an explosion occurred and the craft disintegrated, according to witnesses. Another US Air flight crashed in Charlotte, N.C., last month, one of five fatal crashes the airline has experienced in the past half-decade. President Clinton offered condolences to the families of those aboard...
