Coeducation at Harvard has had some effect on Harvard-Wellesley relations, according to Dean of Students Archie C. Epps III. Although Wellesley women had traditionally attended the annual Harvard freshman picnic, Epps decided to stop inviting them in 1979.
Both Wellesley students and Harvard women who visit the college noted that coeducation makes the atmosphere at their respective schools very different.
One student counselor says the Administrative Board, which handles student discipline cases, is "notorious for inaction," and Ellen Porter Honnet, assistant dean of the College for coeducation and a sexual harassment hearing officer, says she agrees. Honnet will keep her current job while serving as interim assistant dean of the College for coeducation. The appointment follows the departure of Marlyn M. Lewis '70 this fall for a position in the office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
"His goals and visions have not been conservative or cautious," says Lewis, who terms Fox a visionary. She cited Fox's commitment to coeducation during the integration of Radcliffe in the 1970s, and his push for equal funding for women's athletics.
