...said Finch, ruefully quoting an aide, "there are not going to be too many more people we can offend." He ticked off a list of the recently alienated: farmers (by the ban on DDT), the overweight (by the ban on cyclamates) and sportsmen (by the impounding of Lake Michigan coho salmon last spring). "The first problem we have," said Finch, "is 40,000 inflammable Santa Clauses. I guess HEW will be known as the department that killed Santa Claus...

...dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, the more dangerous it seems to be. DDT has been accused of contributing to the virtual disappearance of the peregrine-falcon on the East Coast of the U.S., of causing cancer in mice, and of upsetting whole ecosystems. It is ubiquitous, appearing unexpectedly in Lake Michigan's coho salmon and even in Antarctica's snows, where it is carried by winds. Some scientists fear that DDT, washed into oceans, may kill off the plankton that supplies 70% of the earth's oxygen...

FIFTH DAY. After an uneventful day's hunt, Fred went to the mainland for supplies. At the Ponderosa on Interstate 75, he bought some smoked fish, and the proprietress, Mrs. Melina Hills, invited him into her kitchen for some homemade dandelion wine. She showed him a 20-lb. coho salmon she had "pulled outa the crick this mornin' " as well as photographs of the half-grown pet bobcat she had "potty-trained." Then, handing Fred a sponge soaked in anise oil, she confided: "Don't breeze it around, but that's the best buck lure there...

Michigan recently imposed a similar ban after the FDA condemned some 700,000 coho salmon from Lake Michigan because they had unacceptably high concentrations of DDT. Stringent controls are now being considered in the states of Massachusetts, New York and Wisconsin...

Reacting to the growing pressure for stricter enforcement, the Food and Drug Administration last month seized 28,150 pounds of Lake Michigan coho salmon infected by pesticide residue. But no one knows how much of the fish plucked from U.S. lakes daily by commercial and sport fishermen is contaminated. A classic example is Clear Lake, Calif., where DDT (at the minuscule proportion of two one-hundredths of a part per million parts of water) was used to kill off a troublesome, lake-hatching insect. As a result, plankton accumulated DDT residues at five parts per million; fatty tissue of fish...
