This is the burden of Richard Rhodes' excellent book about the visionaries whose pure science was alloyed with the tainted art of politics. Bits and pieces of the atom bomb story are well known, especially the dramatic race to Trinity by J. Robert Oppenheimer and his brainy cohort at Los Alamos, N. Mex. In Rhodes' comprehensive view, the blinding flash of that achievement climaxes decades of brilliant ideas, technological innovations and the contributions of incandescent personalities. "Had astronomers been watching," he writes, "they could have seen ((the explosion)) reflected from the moon, literal moonshine." But moments after the artificial sunburst...

Marriage prospects should improve for women in the baby-bust generation. Women tend to marry men a few years older than themselves, and younger women will find larger numbers of potential spouses among the baby boomers. Nonetheless, demographers predict that the smaller cohort of the baby busters will form fewer families, resulting in less demand for housing and household goods. By the middle of the next decade, the number of new households a year could drop to 1.2 million, down from an average of 1.7 million during the 1970s. Says Ben Wattenberg of A.E.I.: "What you put into a Social Security system is babies, and what you get out is money. Those nice baby-boom yuppies forgot to put a baby in the system...

...former Navy radioman had much reason for remorse. At last week's sentencing hearing, prosecutors made public two affidavits containing new details of what the Soviet Union got for the $332,000 apiece that it paid Whitworth and his former Navy cohort, Spymaster John Walker, from 1975 to 1985. One affidavit was based on the debriefing of Vitaly Yurchenko, the KGB officer who defected to the U.S. and then returned to the Soviet Union last year. Yurchenko, according to the affidavit, learned from his superiors "that the KGB regarded the Walker-Whitworth operation to be the most important...

During the 1984 campaign, Reagan's best receptions came on college campuses. A White House survey for May showed that 82% of registered voters age 24 and under approved of Reagan. Says Presidential Pollster Richard Wirthlin: "This is an age cohort that has known only two Presidents." The binary vision of the young: in their memories, Carter meant failure, Reagan means success...
