...Coolidge Tube. After receiving his gold medal last week, Dr. Coolidge brought out upon the platform an astonishing tangle of insulators, wires, supports, switches, a huge induction coil-equipment for supplying 350,000 volts. In his hand he held, a glass vessel, five feet long, bulging in the middle. This was a vacuum tube, made portable so that it could be attached to an exhaustion pump in any laboratory. Into one neck ran the usual filaments to conduct electric current. These filaments ended in electrodes, of which the negative one or cathode could be heated white hot electrically before introducing...

When tamer sections of the country heard last week that, in the rugged state of Washington, where snow-toothed mountains leap skyward and rivers with names like Snake and Yakima coil through forests never scarred by the ringing ax, the Governor had, after ten years of grim waiting, "got" the President of the State University for an old grudge, there was less alarm for the welfare of public education than thrill at the substantiation of legend...

...recommend to girls a device invented by one Emil Pruess. Not to all girls, but to nice girls, above all to nice girls who are pretty. It is called in German, the "Anti-Masher." A nice girl, imperiled, perhaps disastrously, presses against her assailant's body an induction coil attached to the Pruess Battery, which she carries concealed under her dress. Low amperage of 1,000 volts destroys consciousness...

...playing in the shade of the ohia-lehuas, digging yams and arums under the kukui, the algarola and the bastard sandalwood, the little kingdom went from bad to better and from better to worse, while the corpulent monarchs, after their daily lomi-lomi, shuffled across and off this mortal coil. Young Dole was educated at Oahu College, and then went to Williams College. He received his law training in Boston and returned again to the Islands, but still the great 200, 300, 400 Ib. monarchs, begarlanded, strutted on their way ?an illustrious dynasty, Kamehameha III, Kamehameha IV, Kamehameha...

...principle on which the invention rests is simple. A permanent magnet is buried in the track at a point opposite each semaphore. A pick-up coil is placed under part of the locomotive. When passing over the magnet in the roadbed, this pick-up coil receives the impulse, which in turn is communicated to the apparatus on the engine controlling the air brakes. If the signal is set at "caution" or "danger," the magnet reflects that indication and the speed of the train is automatically reduced. If the engineer does not heed this warning but allows his train to pass...
