...began last week, the American army in Kuwait received a remarkable order from the brass: stow your flags. The fearsome steel coil of tanks and artillery and Bradley fighting vehicles was told to enter enemy territory humbly, stripped of all banners, including the Stars and Stripes. This seemed slightly un-American--we're flag crazed to the point of silliness--and entirely appropriate; liberation, not conquest, was the stated purpose of the war. And so, when the Marines captured their first town, Umm Qasr, and the American flag was reflexively raised in triumph, it was quickly hauled down...

...HORIZON Researchers are exploring a similar technique that sends an electrical current through the vagus nerve--a major conduit wiring the heart and intestines--which then delivers it to the brain. Another approach, called regional transcranial magnetic stimulation, uses an electric coil shaped like a figure eight to create a magnetic field inside the pre-frontal cortex, which plays a key role in mood regulation...

Equally impressive are the new gas chromatography and mass spectrometry machines. To test a bit of evidence whose chemical composition is unknown, investigators place it in a gas chromatograph--essentially a high-intensity oven--where it's vaporized. The resulting gas is funneled into a coil-shaped structure lined with chemicals that cause the components in the gas to exit at different rates. These components are then sorted by atomic weight and converted into a graph. Investigators then compare the readout with a reference library, determining what the evidence is made...

...student clay-workers and professional volunteers guided novices through the steps of throwing a pot on the wheel and then molding it little by little into a bowl, a modest vase or perhaps an all-purpose change dish. Hand-builders relied on their play-dough instincts to roll and coil the clay, crafting an incredible array of figures and vessels. Everything made at Clay All Night is left behind with an identifying email address attached so that once the piece is fired, its crafter can be notified and come back to glaze the piece...
