These are the people who are taking the MBTA to court; the vocal citizens, the long-time residents, well-off enough to take the time to fight the MBTA. On the other side of the coin are those who don't own cars or run businesses in Cambridge. There is a housing project near the proposed Alewife terminus. The people there--primarily lower-middle income blacks--rely on the MBTA for their transportation. During the Wimbledon tennis matches, one of the most popular meeting places for the American players and their wives was a coin laundry just off trendy Carnaby Street. Americans balked at the high cost of sending their laundry out. One tourist, in fact, was arrested for trying to escape from a London laundry without paying his bill. FRANCE Flights into Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports were delayed an average of 16 hours, and many were held up for two days. Airport cafes and bars ran low on food and drink. Pharmacies had a run on inflatable cushions. Telephone coin boxes became so full that they jammed. At one point, Royal Air Maroc canceled flights. Angry passengers charged its offices at Orly and had to be restrained by riot police, who later took up positions to protect other airline ticket counters.
