When homeless men began to congregate on heating grates outside of McKinlock Hall last January, the University installed metal barriers over the grates on the coldest night of the year. Unfortunately, administrators had to learn the hard way that problems which affect the community at large also impact Harvard, and in this case, Leverett House. And so the grates soon came...
...reaching them and threatening to burn through the seal. NASA did ask its booster contractor, Morton Thiokol, to seek a solution. Thiokol set up a seal task force at its plant in Utah. This work received more attention after a shuttle was launched on Jan. 24, 1985, following the coldest overnight cape temperature of any flight to date: in the 20s. This launch produced the most extensive ring damage. Morton Thiokol concluded in a postflight summary that "low temperature enhanced probability" of seal erosion. After testing the resiliency of the rings at various temperatures, the company told NASA...

It took more conscious effort and cost to cover those grates than to simply leave them open. It is evidence of a desire for simple solutions; to connect those men to a rash of thefts in Leverett simply perpetuates a myth about the homeless. If there were complaints, there should have...
