...DIED. PAUL WELLSTONE, 58, liberal Democrat senator from Minnesota, who was running head-to-head with Republican Norm Coleman in one of this year's most competitive Senate races; in a plane crash in Minnesota. Wellstone's reelection was seen as vital for the Democrats' control of the Senate...

There is a good deal of irony in the Republican sympathy and obligatory sentiments of reverence for the integrity Wellstone displayed. The awkwardness of their championing him for his conviction before debasing the same principles is palpable. President Bush hand-picked Norm Coleman, Minnesota’s Republican senatorial nominee, to remove Wellstone from office. The Republican National Committee openly targeted Minnesota as a top prospect for gaining the much-needed majority-swaying seat this November. Now, Republicans will face a backlash of support from Minnesotans fondly remembering Wellstone. Death brings out our mortality as humans, and few embodied...

...Wellstone had been locked in a tight re-election campaign against Republican challenger Norm Coleman and had begun to pull away in recent weeks, in part because this year's chapter in the Iraq saga provided Wellstone with an opportunity to remind Minnesotans that his maverick streak remained as sharp as ever. As the only vulnerable incumbent to vote against the resolution that would give President Bush war powers, Wellstone told the Senate, "Acting now on our own might be a sign of our power, but acting sensibly and in a measured way in concert with our allies ... would...

With Wellstone's death, the Senate is divided 49 to 49 to 1. If Coleman were to win, he would fill the vacancy immediately, and Republicans would suddenly have an advantage that could help them push through President Bush's struggling Homeland Security bill before the new year. Optimism, though, was hard to find among G.O.P. officials, who fear a possible repeat of what one G.O.P...

...Engaged in a tough fight for his third term, Wellstone had recently grabbed a slim lead in the polls over his opponent, former St. Paul mayor Norm Coleman. Now, 11 days before Election Day, Wellstone's death throws a chaotic race for control of the Senate into even greater turmoil. Minnesota state law allows Governor Jesse Ventura or the state Democratic Party to replace Wellstone's name on the ballot up until four days before the election. State Democratic leaders said they were confident they would find a replacement, possibly Rebecca Yanisch, the state trade commissioner who unsuccessfully sought...
