...defending a former official of the Government who is being sued for damages on the allegation that he compelled the payment of a tax which was in fact invalid. This man was trying to enforce a Federal statute, asserting that the tax was valid, and trying to collect it. He is now being sued for that by one of the persons who paid the tax. His interests are absolutely identical with those of the Government of the United States. I do not see why a Member of the House or Senate should be prohibited from acting in a case...

From 1894 to 1908, betting on New York horse races was legal under State law. In 1908 Charles Evans Hughes as a reform Governor outlawed racetrack bets with a statute which also denied betters the right to sue to collect winnings. Last week the Treasury footed up collections for nine months, found they totaled $2,306,000,000, indicating that the President is probably going to be about right. March tax collections were $420,000,000, higher than any month since June 1931. The Treasury had hoped to collect $250,000,000 in March income taxes and last week it found that it had got $230,000,000-not quite as much as expected but one-third again as much...

According to Today, Nazi groups have been formed in Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Manhattan; they have upwards of 6.000 members; they hold meetings, collect dues, wear Nazi uniforms and sometimes drill in turnhallen; members of the League of Friends of the New Germany pledge: "I do not belong to any secret organization of any kind [Freemasons, etc.]. I am of Aryan descent, free of Jewish or colored racial traces"; their political ideal "is organically...
