...monoculture becomes an object of worship. They gripe about having no sex because all the boys are intolerably interested in sports or guitars and amuse themselves by obsessively following weirdoes around their homogenous, suburban neighborhood. But slowly the relationship becomes strained as Enid befriends Seymour (Steve Buscemi), a lonely collector of antique ephemera, and Rebecca yearns to put her life in some sort of direction...
...screen. Fans of the Clowes original will want the audience to like her even if she's kind of obnoxious and opinionated. Johansson likewise perfectly matches the blonde, more reserved Rebecca. And though his character doesn't exist in the original comic, Buscemi's self-hating, nerdish record collector Seymour could easily have stepped out of its pages...
...DiBenedetto dredged up the names of literally hundreds of Einhorn's international coterie of friends and true believers, and he went after every last one of them. He was rumored to have "lost it," alcohol and drugs having blunted his satiric edge. When mentioned at all, his name was preceded...
...WORLD TRADE BRIDGE Toll collector Robert Fuentes unlocks the grimy padlock and unloops heavy chains at the gate to the bridge--one of five busy spans. The bridge is 13 months old and reveals just how open--and closed--the border is these days. It's sleek, wide, built for speed and highly efficient: regular semis have electronic passes that let them zip right through. But the bridge is also slung with concertina wire; 55 state and federal agencies--from the irs to the FDA--have offices in town. Here only Customs and the National Guard carry side arms...
