Most freelancers are made anxious by a market that is steadily wasting away. A dozen magazines, among them Collier's, American Magazine, Coronet and Woman's Home Companion, have folded in the past seven years. Last month the Saturday Evening Post, which used to receive 100,000 unsolicited manuscripts a year, announced that henceforth all of them would be sent back unopened. Havemann's reputation insulates him from such vicissitudes. He does not have to solicit magazines; they solicit him. Of every four articles he writes, three stem from some editor's suggestion...
...such a wonderful friendship that it would be a shame to spoil it with marriage," quoth Actress Joan Fontaine, 45, who has lost three former friends that way: Husbands Brian Aherne, William Dozier and Collier Young. Joan pooh-poohed stories that she was about to marry Cartoonist Charles Addams, 51, the Van Gogh of the ghouls. "Marriage is for people who want babies or to live in villages; since we want neither, we're not interested...
...Negroes (39.9% of the population) are hard pressed for living room. They live on 24.6% of the total land zoned for residential purposes, are largely confined to a black belt running northwest to southeast through the heart of the city. In this belt, one of the best districts is Collier Heights, in northwest Atlanta. The main trouble with Collier Heights is that it is tantalizingly close to a white neighborhood called Cascade Heights, where homes range from...
Block-Busting. Both Negroes and whites acted badly in the events that led up to the barrier between Collier Heights and Cascade Heights. Negro real estate brokers used blockbusting techniques to try to buy homes in the Peyton-Utoy subdivision of Cascade Heights. They falsely told white residents that their neighbors had put their homes up for sale and conspicuously drove Negro clients through the area on Sunday to frighten white owners. A white real estate man threatened to sell his home and some lots to Negroes in order to get a higher price from white buyers in the area...
Three pieces at the end are about the "cultural and intellectual community" of the Atlantic countries. Of these, David Cole's on Odets, Genet and Osborne is alone a joy to read for its reflections on how these playwrights manhandle their audiences. George Collier has written an extremely intelligent and learned article on the anthropological methods of France, England, and America which after three readings still leaves me, if instructed, cold; it may bring something to others. Drew de Shong has a weird little rapid-fire glance at three avant-garde sculptors, a lollipop he lets us lick just once...
