We decide to calm our nerves with egg-and-bacon rolls at the last shop on our five-hour drive west through hop fields and farming towns. By the time we push our rafts cautiously into the Collingwood River a few hours later, any fantasy of an easy ride is long gone. A lurid sign warning of the risks of rafting had confronted us as the bus pulled off the Lyell Highway, and our outfits have added to the feeling of uneasy excitement. We clip bright life jackets over...

It's a Friday morning and Josh is bent over in the middle of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, using a paint-dipped broom to embellish one of the 50-m arcs for tomorrow night's Brisbane vs. Collingwood game. They wrote more great, weird songs for their third album, Welcome Interstate Managers, including All Kinds of Time, about a high school quarterback...

On the band's recent tour, opening for Matchbox Twenty, he says, "the hard-core fans were there, but there's a large contingent that just wants the single, or holds up the sign that says, I'M STACY'S MOM." He sighs. "I hope it doesn't haunt us." Schlesinger couldn't be happier. With the momentum from Stacy's Mom, the band has persuaded its label to do a video for its second single, Mexican Wine, in Brazil. There will be several yachts in the video and a helicopter too. "Actually...
