According to its Prospectus for next year, the New College will "discover and explore alternatives to the present system of undergraduate education." It plans to hold as many as 50 student-initiated groups next year, starting in September. ...WEEK I visited one of those colloquia, Rachel Bas-Cohain, a young artist-Scholar in her late twenties, presented her experiments with reflected light, motion, and polarizing materials. As one of the guests, I wandered with about fifty women through her exhibit, a collection of whirring, flashing, rotating constructions made of glass, wood, water, and light. One construction consisted of two panes of glass pressed against each other and suspended from the ceiling.
