Made up of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers from Fort Bragg, N.C., and Seventh Infantry troops from Fort Ord, Calif., backed by special units, it raced to secure vital facilities at the Caribbean end of the canal, near Colon. ...regular, moderate exercise, no one is sure of the physiological mechanisms involved. It may be that exercise increases coronary blood flow, decreases clotting or both, which would limit the blood-vessel blockages that cause cardiovascular problems. And some scientists speculate that exercise increases bowel motility, a factor in avoiding colon cancer. Those questions may be answered in part by the next phase of the investigation, which is expected to include more than 40,000 people. Such speculations are literally academic, though. For the average man or woman, the message is clear: get moving...

...researchers caution, however, that the drugs are not effective for patients with more severe colon cancer, in which the malignancy has already spread throughout the body. Nor have studies shown a benefit for those patients whose cancers were detected at an early stage. Still, Dr. Michael Friedman of the National Cancer Institute called this first success for drug therapy against colon cancer a "terrific intellectual breakthrough." The institute has alerted 35,000 cancer doctors across the country. And some experts are hopeful that the findings will lead to similar therapies for other cancers...
