...Colonel Hamadi (not his real name) was commander of a tank unit in Iraq's Third Army before he was arrested for links--which he denies--to an opposition party. He was held for 10 months. Saddam's military intelligence, he says, tortured him several times a week. "Sometimes they hung me from a ceiling fan to make me confess to something that was not true," says the colonel. When he was released last spring, he fled to northern Iraq, where the country's Kurdish minority functions almost autonomously from Baghdad under the protection of the U.S.-British...

...anecdote, recently published in a mostly fictional "novelization" of the Hanssen story by Lawrence Schiller, a specialist in lurid crime stories, has been confirmed to TIME by Hoschouer, a retired Army lieutenant colonel now living in Germany. "Bob fantasized about me making love to Bonnie and knew that she wouldn't go for it," Hoschouer says. "He got fascinated with Rohypnol [an illegal "date rape" drug] and suggested I might be able to come up with some here. I told him that I had looked for some but without success." Hoschouer says he put Hanssen off until he gave...

...Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Accused of having an affair with a female follower, he was disrobed, although he still insists he is innocent. The same can't be said for former abbot Phra Thammathorn Wanchai. Two years ago, he was caught by a television news crew in an army colonel's uniform holding a tryst with two prostitutes. Disrobed and sentenced to six months in jail for impersonating an army officer, he was unrepentant and threatened to expose other monks...

As a result, the building possesses a dynamic interface between the passengers and their transport. This subtle bending of rigid shapes lends their models a palpable warmth, as realized in their Maria Colonel apartment block designed in the mid-1970s in Seville. The outer structure is angular and somewhat abrasive, but the courtyard within is organic and comforting, having been constructed in the shape of a kidney or an artist’s palette...

Three weeks ago, the trial of Rwandan Colonel Theoneste Bagosora for the murder of 800,000 people in 100 days was supposed to begin in Tanzania. However, his current boycott of the proceedings has led to an adjournment of his trial until September. Bagosora will be facing the International War Crimes Tribunal for Rwanda, a special U.N. tribunal set up to punish those responsible for the ethnically-motivated massacres in Rwanda in 1994. In another U.N. war crimes trial, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has taken a similar strategy of obstructionism. He delays his trial with each of his attempts...
