Like much of the U.S. mainland, Puerto Rico is strapped for funds that it sorely needs to overhaul its schools and other public facilities. But the commonwealth does own a thriving telephone company that has a total value of more than $2 billion. So last week Governor Rafael Hernandez Colon proposed that Puerto Rico sell the phone company and invest the proceeds in two $1 billion funds. The commonwealth would use the interest from the funds to upgrade Puerto Rico's schools and rebuild its crumbling infrastructure, including its water and sewerage systems...
...wasn't long before Blades joined the roster of young Latin musicians at Fania records, the leading salsa label. In 1978 he and trombonist Willie Colon recorded the album Siembra (Seed), which went on to become one of the best- selling salsa albums of all time. TASK FORCE ATLANTIC. Made up of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers from Fort Bragg, N.C., and Seventh Infantry troops from Fort Ord, Calif., backed by special units, it raced to secure vital facilities at the Caribbean end of the canal, near Colon. The task force encountered stiff resistance from a P.D.F. naval infantry unit on the northern coast. This force also freed 48 P.D.F. prisoners at Gamboa prison...

It may be that exercise increases coronary blood flow, decreases clotting or both, which would limit the blood-vessel blockages that cause cardiovascular problems. And some scientists speculate that exercise increases bowel motility, a factor in avoiding colon cancer. Those questions may be answered in part by the next phase of the investigation, which is expected to include more than 40,000 people. Such speculations are literally academic, though. For the average man or woman, the message is clear: get moving...
...researchers caution, however, that the drugs are not effective for patients with more severe colon cancer, in which the malignancy has already spread throughout the body. Nor have studies shown a benefit for those patients whose cancers were detected at an early stage. Still, Dr. Michael Friedman of the National Cancer Institute called this first success for drug therapy against colon cancer a "terrific intellectual breakthrough." The institute has alerted 35,000 cancer doctors across the country. And some experts are hopeful that the findings will lead to similar therapies for other cancers...
