That there is vegetation on Mars is a fairly plausible assumption. The reddish hue of the planet used to be ascribed to foliage of that color. A more favored explanation nowadays is chemical absorption of oxygen in the soil-that is, oxidation or "rusting" of the Martian terrain. But the dark patches on the planet's surface grow heavier and more distinct in winter, change from blue-green in summer to chocolate brown in winter. These changes strongly suggest vegetation. The potent chemical compound called chlorophyll is present in all the green plants of Earth, but spectroscopic analysis...

...Black," wrote Redon, "is the most important color; nothing can prostitute it." Although he liked to call them his noirs, Redon lithographs run the gamut of neutral tones from rich black to glaring white, rely upon contrasts for their emotional effect. Typical of Redon's noirs were the Chicago show's mythical Pegasus, The Winged One, a Child's Head with Flowers, and unearthly chimeras ranging all the way from The Head of the Infinite Suspended in a Dim, Precarious Light to a shocking confrontation that anyone who has ever had a hangover could understand...

A sixth-grader conceived Japan as a silkworm just fallen off a mulberry leaf (entitled He Overate!); one Chune Fook did a heart-rending distortion of two famine victims. Judged best was Ernest Louie's deadly earnest, broad-stroked water color of a Chinese family fleeing in terror from a bombed village. Ernest, a 16-year-old Clevelander, reads the papers...

What some old-line Texas Democrats questioned, however, was the precise color of Mr. Howe's political complexion. His father was a stand-pat Republican. His Atchison Globe is still Republican. Moreover, Texas folk are still quoting a public address Gene Howe made two years ago when, kidding on the square, he said that before moving to Texas, he and his late partner, Wilbur C. Hawk, nipped a coin to determine which would be Democrat, which Republican. Until his death in 1936 Hawk supported Alf Landon. But if Gene Howe never gets to Congress, he probably...

...Guinea, is a triangular-shaped, 40-acre swamp with no visible outlet. On hands and knees, Charles Miller gazed down into its reeds. A quarter mile away something moved. Charles Miller's blood froze. Lashing across the swamp was a dinosaur. It was 35 feet long, a yellowish color, with scales laid on like armor plate, a bony-flanged head, and snappin-turtle beak. Half blinded by cold sweat, Charles Miller pressed the release on his camera.* The dinosaur reared up on its hind legs, its small forelegs dangling, hissed roaringly, shot its snaky neck in his direction...
