Thus it was a relief for Kennedy to take off on what White House staffers, with straight faces, called a "nonpolitical" weekend trip. In speeches in South Dakota, Colorado and California, he stuck mainly to bipartisan subjects of interest in the West: conservation and reclamation, water and power, floods and dams. But he well knew that for a politician there is no such thing as a nonpolitical handshake -and that the folks beaming up at him would suffer no amnesia on election...
...pulses from Thule's radar swept rhythmically over the icecap, back came strong reflections that showed as targets on the radar screens. This was just what BMEWS was built for. Warning of possible missile attack flashed across ice and tundra to the North American Air Defense Command at Colorado Springs; a frantic flap spread over the continent. Airbases waited for red alerts, their bombers poised on the runways. Roused out of bed at home in Moorestown, Holmes listened carefully to a telephoned description of the frightening signals and realized what must have happened. Radar pulses from Thule had soared...

They have an admiring new applicant: the Peace Corps. Slated, to join the third batch of boys in Colorado this summer are 50 Nepal-bound Peace Corpsmen-including 19 women...
Steak & Hymns. Last week the 22nd annual Montosa Camp Meeting was in full swing in Socorro County, N. Mex., the fourth in a series of revival sessions held each summer along a circuit that includes the cow counties of west Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. There were two ministers to conduct services four or five times each day in the big, steel-sided tabernacle, and Bible lessons for the children. Days began with Scripture readings and ended with the singing of hymns. Nights, the men and women swapped stories around campfires before bedding down in trailers or in tents...
