TIME'S four-color picture stories are the product of long, painstaking research and planning by editors, correspondents and photographers. This week's color story in Art on Libya's lost city of Leptis Magna started as usual-but did not end that way. The editors decided that Leptis Magna would be a good color subject, gathered a fat file of material on the lost city, considered what photographer would be best for the job, asked the Rome bureau to check whether any photographer there had taken any color pictures of the place that might serve...

...there is any color appropriate to offset the general grays and blacks, that color is red. One scene ends with the upstage area bathed in red, which brings to mind the blood with which the play is drenched (there are over a hundred references to blood in the text alone). In the settings, for which Mr. Hays is also responsible, the color of blood makes several appearances: in the castle hangings, in the royal carpet, in the two thrones (though these last seem to suggest the red lacquer of China rather than the rough furniture of medieval Scotland). They are lush in the best Hollywood tradition, but never maudlin...

Valued at $5,000,000, it was put together in the early part of the century by a Japanese shipbuilder named Kojiro Matsukata, who bought largely by lot, and reportedly paid between $15 million and $20 million all told. Because the Japanese government imposed a 100% duty on art works, Matsukata kept the bulk of his collection in Paris and London. The London half was bombed out in World...

Porgy and Bess. George Gershwin's songs, Pearl Bailey's lusty singing and Sammy Davis Jr.'s diabolic portrayal of Sportin' Life pep up Sam Goldwyn's ponderous, $7,000,000 film version (in wide-screen Todd-AO and lush color) of America's No. 1 folk opera...
