...Reality in Iraq Columnist Joe Klein's "The End of Rose-Petal Fantasies" suggested that hawkish neoconservatives may be losing their influence on the Bush Administration's policies in Iraq and elsewhere [Feb. 7]. Klein says Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who were "complicit in rose-petal scenarios" for Iraq, may now be less susceptible to fantasies. The only fantasy I can see is Klein's in thinking that what has happened in Iraq has been a failure. Iraq is far from a lost cause, as was proved when Iraqis in all walks of life braved...
Walls, who is a gossip columnist, is a dead-on, dry-eyed portraitist, both of others and of herself. She writes without a drop of self-pity, and she never makes the mistake of allowing her parents to become monsters: they're always flawed yet recognizably human, desperately trying to be themselves and instead destroying everyone around them. He criticized congressional Democrats for doing what they've been elected to do--act as an opposition party. The last thing they should do is shrink from the task. Our system of government absolutely requires that there be questioning. Bush does not have a mandate, and Democrats need to remind him of that every day. Klein accuses Democrats of wanting to preserve the past rather than discover the future. But when the future is envisioned by a President who bases his plans on unsubstantiated claims...
