Obama may have evoked Bush to encourage bipartisan good-fellowship, but he did not actually learn about this alternative from his predecessor. In 2006, Obama co-wrote a column with Hillary Clinton for the New England Journal of Medicine in which the two, then Senators, called for grant money to support programs that encourage doctors to admit errors up front and compensate patients early and out of court.
