...answer that question that the leading major U.S. cable operators are racing to become Internet providers. Today's media darling, @Home, which launched last year vowing to build the first national cable-modem network, has exclusive deals with TCI, Cox and Comcast. In addition to its Fremont service, it is readying rollouts with TCI in Hartford, Connecticut, and Arlington, Illinois; Cox in Orange County, California; and Comcast in Baltimore, Maryland. "We're in a frenzy," says CEO Tom Jermoluk. "We've got 20 or 30 cities going online. We'll reach hundreds of thousands of homes very shortly...
...quite shaken his yen for upscale properties and in short order was using QVC to launch the exhaustively chronicled bidding war for Paramount that he lost to Viacom's Sumner Redstone. By the summer of 1994, Diller was describing a projected takeover of CBS as his "destiny." But Comcast, a cable company that owned a 15.5% stake in QVC, squelched the deal and then tendered its own offer to buy out Diller's share of the channel. "After a lot of soul searching...
...local phone companies enter one another's business. Other firms, including long-distance carriers, could also provide local phone service. Result: one-stop shopping in which companies would offer packages of telephone and TV services directly to the home. With that in mind, cable firms TCI, Cox Enterprises and Comcast last year joined forces with Sprint to develop a nationwide network for delivering cable and telephone signals to the same customers...
Some companies are quietly finding ways to link up all these appliances. Motorola created a new unit in January to build equipment that will bring online networks to home computers via TV cables. Motorola plans to test the system this year in a venture with TCI in suburban Chicago. (Comcast is experimenting with a similar system in Philadelphia, using equipment made by Zenith.) Apple, in conjunction with Texas Instruments, will market a tool it calls FireWire, designed to hook all such devices together so they can be operated from a single ``touchpad,'' or remote-control device...
