...Last week I went to Philadelphia," comedian W.C. Fields once said, "but it was closed." Formerly America's capital and its largest city, Philadelphia lost much of its population and influence over the centuries. But it's open now. As America gets ready for Barack Obama's inauguration, anyone looking for a dose of U.S. history and culture would do well to skip Washington D.C. and head to the City of Brotherly Love...

...Arnold Schwarzenegger to be the “governator”, Minnesota elected Jesse “The Body” Ventura, a former professional wrestler, as its top executive. Now, more than a decade later, the Minnesota State Canvassing Board has declared that Democrat Al Franken, former comedian and Saturday Night Live writer, has defeated Republican Norm Coleman after a lengthy recount. We commend Minnesota for being prepared for close elections and for dutifully carrying out the recount in the face of a press frenzy. Will Rogers could count on a chortle whenever he said, "I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat." But these are serious times: the same day the Senate convened with two Democratic seats unfilled (comedian Al Franken's microscopic margin of victory is being contested in Minnesota), Obama announced that the nation could soon face a trillion-dollar deficit. Franken made an acceptance speech just hours after the board met and the certification put a temporary stamp on the two-month recount. Franken, however, doesn't yet have the election certificate needed to take his seat in Washington, and a lawsuit filed by Coleman threatens to entangle the race in even more months of legal wrangling. ...Minnesota, recounts and legal wranglings have approached levels of electoral chaos not witnessed since Florida's hanging chads. Democrat and former Saturday Night Live comedian Franken declared victory on Monday, but he won't be sworn in with the rest of the class. Given the tough standard the Dems are holding Burris to, they would have a hard time waving in Franken without an official stamp of approval, and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, a Republican, is inclined to allow Coleman the opportunity to exhaust all avenues of appeal. Even if the Democrats tried to swear Franken in - and party leaders...
