...Both checked their star maps, then hurriedly mounted their bicycles and pedaled furiously to the nearest telegraph office. There they dispatched the word to the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. Incredibly, the same two amateur astronomers who had independently but almost simultaneously discovered 1965's famous and brilliant Ikeya-Seki comet had discovered another...

Notified by the Tokyo observatory, scientists at the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass., announced the existence of the new comet. It was the 14th discovered during 1967, one more than the previous yearly record of 13. In honor of the discoverers, the Smithsonian named it Ikeya-Seki 1967n (the 14th letter in the alphabet). The new Ikeya-Seki, the Smithsonian reported, had a brightness of only the ninth magnitude and would gradually fade away without becoming visible to the naked...

What makes the difference, Van Allen says, is an electrical potential of 50,000 volts generated across the earth's comet-shaped magnetic field by a combination of two complex effects. As the solar wind blows by the earth, compressing the magnetic field into a rounded shell on the daylight side and sweeping it into a long tail on the night side (TIME, April 22, 1966), it produces friction on the outer boundary of the magnetic field. This friction generates a positive electrical charge on the morning side of the boundary, a negative charge on the opposite, or evening...

Mercury will introduce its new Montego, which will essentially be an elongated Comet. Dodge will add some curves to its slow-selling Charger. Such features as cover-up headlights will become even more familiar. And to comply with new federal regulations, the '68 cars will have smog-emission-control devices and, mandatory after Jan. 1, such safety features as additional seat belts (with...

...Coal's role. In an editorial headlined "A Damning Indictment," the London Financial Times argued for what it called "the honorable tradition that whenever a disaster occurs the man in command should go." Not so, snapped Sir Miles Thomas, who had been head of BOAC when the early Comet jet airliners were crashing. "I wouldn't resign," said he. "I'd see it through and make sure everything possible was done to see that it never happened again." A letter from former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, who tapped Robens for the N.C.B. job in 1961, told "Dear...
