This is not to denigrate the value of a Harvard degree, Nor, for that matter, the value of a bowl of soup. Both, these commodities can come in very handy, comfort the dying, and get one through many a hard day to come. Both come in various flavors, strengths, and thicknesses. Both, any young Radcliffe woman will note, are invaluable attributes in trapping a young Harvard man. (As Mrs. LeBaron Russell Briggs would no doubt agree). Both are best when hot; both can be burned...
...CYNICAL here might take comfort in the knowledge that both Segal and Brewster were educated at Harvard, and that most of Reich's analysis is really Galbraith without the economics (a concept, admittedly, ?me might find as ludicrous as Galbraith without the modesty). They can snort to each other-and rightly so-that each Brewster speech, each Segal movie, each Reich pronouncement, each flattering Israel Shenker Times profile is a triumph of style over content, content ?? residing exclusively somewhere north of the Charles. But it's a triumph nonetheless. And can we ignore it? More than we suspect, Harvard...
There are particular people who should be very much on our minds and consciences. We owe special honor and comfort to the families of the Americans who gave their lives in Viet Nam, and we owe a special scorn to any politicians who might seek to exploit their sorrow. We owe far better medical care to the Viet Nam wounded than they are getting in many of our hospitals. We must, of course, bring home our prisoners from North Viet Nam, though it may not help to treat this as a condition for, instead of a consequence of, peace...
Harvard allows one to do luxuriously little of what it wants and still live with the silly comfort of getting a degree. What attention I did honestly pay to specific courses was adequately paralleled by a commitment to a vaguely decadent night club existence. Life was literally split between truck drivers and tutors, shifty club owners and sharp section leaders, drunken middle-aged divorcees and liberated women. South Boston crackers and black militant intellectuals; and between crowds trying to relax and students brutally trying to compete, between songs that often meant something to my life and papers that often argued...
...Focus. A few eye doctors find soft lenses potentially dangerous. "The instant and continuous comfort may be the treacherous element in the soft lens," according to Dr. G. Peter Halberg, corresponding secretary of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists. "If you get hurt by the hard lens, you usually know it immediately." A soft lens, he noted, may mask the warning discomfort of an eye injury. Indeed, Dr. Richard Troutman, surgeon director of the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, has already seen three "complications" involving experimental soft contact lenses. The patients later required cornea grafts...
