...Dale Travis' Doctor Dulcamara, a hobo-quack who bore an eerie resemblance to the poet Donald Hall. Dulcamara's vendor antics completely undercut his dramatic entrance and resonant "udite" ("listen!"), and his abracadabra, Darkwing Duck gesturings made one laugh out loud. If it hadn't been for the skillful comic acting of these two, the farcical plot would have been in awkward tension with the gorgeous music. Though Donizetti saves his very best for Nemorino's duets with Adina, every major character enjoys at least a few minutes of choice aria...
...Corsaire is a fun, comic, swashbuckling tale, a ballet version of an old Errol Flynn movie with plenty of swordfights, abductions, and veiled, scantily clad women. Set on the coast of the Ionian Sea, while Greece was under Turkish occupation, it is the story of a young pirate, Conrad (Robert Wallace), who falls in love with a Greek slave, Medora (Natasha Akhmarova), in a Turkish bazaar. When a pasha arrives looking for women to add to his harem, Medora is stolen away from him by Conrad and his band...

But Medvedovsky's Kitty is weaker overall: most of her acting is melodramatic and relies too much on loud, angry shouts juxtaposed with hushed, confiding whispers. Martijn Hostetler '00 provides some comic relief as Itsik, head of the resident's committee in the apartment building...
Case in point: Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck). He draws underground comic books with his boyhood pal Banky (Jason Lee). Then he meets Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), also a comix artist, and falls into obsession. The problem is, she's a lesbian. Well, nobody's perfect. And, indeed, she's not perfectly gay, for eventually she succumbs to Holden's passion. This makes him feel terrific--the superstud who has conquered the unconquerable. Except that Banky--who has some homoerotic issues of his own to sort out--discovers otherwise. Alyssa has had male lovers in the past. This devastates Holden...
...solid, timely coverage of local issues. The reporter, Richard M. Burnes '99, detailed the event's history and even provided background for the many jokes which he quoted in the piece. It clearly took a thorough knowledge of Boston politics to cover that event, which included many subtle comic references to recent local events. Burnes, who is from the local area, obviously knows his stuff. As the Reader Representative, I am happy to see that this event was covered by someone with such knowledge...
