...cannot be stressed enough how vibrantly each actor portrays his or her character. The cast is a treasure chest, with gems even among the minor characters: Benowitz is fabulously annoying and provides much-needed comic relief, while her character’s husband, Jeffrey C. Witt ’09, is every inch the smooth Southern lawyer, right down to the immaculate part of his hair...
...Brooks's musicalized version of his 1967 film comedy, was an out-of-the-blue, ain't-Broadway-grand surprise when it opened in the spring of 2001. A septuagenarian funnyman adapts one of his old movies for the stage, writes the songs himself, indulges all his vulgar-vaudevillian comic impulses, and shows the Broadway pros how to do it - what could be more thrilling? And so, when Brooks went back to his film archives to perform the same trick with Young Frankenstein, his horror-movie spoof from 1974, the buzz on Broadway was that another can't-miss...
...difference is that The Producers had a solid, even ingenious, comic storyline - about a Broadway producer who sets out to create a bomb show so he can run off with all the investors' money. "He has a witty and inventive spirit, and several of his plays are as great as any plays that Shakespeare wrote," she adds, citing The Changeling, Women, Beware Women and The Revenger's Tragedy as examples. The idea now is to push him as a grittier, edgier...
...Holocaust saga, Maus. Eisner and Spiegelman's heirs now litter the globe, from Frenchman Joann Sfar (The Rabbi's Cat) to Iranian Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis). "From Superman to the Rabbi's Cat" pays homage to these artists, inviting the viewer to consider the subtexts at work even in comic books about men in tights...
