The photographers, adapters, and original artists have created scenes and situations that are comic in themselves, doubly so with the apt subtitles. Incongruous comparisons are an excellent means of making things look ridiculous, and Lampy has used that means to good advantage. The intimate glimpses of "the spacious colonial mansion of Mrs. Nicholas Carter in Butte, Montana" form a perfect take off, appearing natural and harmless enough at first glance, but revealing their sly satire in the captions and details...

Sir Giles Overreach is a stage villain without redeeming features, while his daughter (strange heredity!) is the sum of all charms. There is the attractive young lover, the afflicted hero, the fawning toad, and a host of stock comic characters brightly differentiated. When--one reads these Elizabethan comedies, one is puzzled sometimes to follow the twisted threads of plot and counterplot; but on the stage it all unfolds compactly and without confusion. The trick of deception, dramatic irony, we call it, is a favorite device in this play...

It was originally written by John Gay in 1728 and marks the beginning of the English comic opera. Since that time it has been frequently revived, and it is due to the interest shown when it was produced last year in London that it has since come to America, first to New York, and now to Boston...
