...arrived in late 2005 from Vertigo/DC in the form of a high-end, full color hardcover graphic novel (166 pages) with a price ($40) that reflects its luxurious production. The other book, Ganges #1 by Kevin Huizenga, co-published by Fantagraphics Books and Coconino Press, looks like an indie comic book - a really nice one - with 32 large-sized pages, two colors (black and blue), a stiff paper cover and an equally stiff price ($8) for the page count. The simultaneous appearance of these two very different comix exploring very similar themes makes for an interesting comparison of styles...
Sylvester Stallone, comic Garry Shandling and former Saturday Night Live cast member Kevin Nealon all made guest appearances this week in what could become Hollywood's biggest thriller of the year: the 60-page wiretapping indictment against former showbiz private investigator Anthony Pellicano. The ex-P.I., who previously worked for celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson, was released from prison last week after serving 30 months on unrelated federal weapons violations. "I want to have fun again." His Comedy Central bosses have not heard from him, but they seem to be forgiving types. Says...
...that digital sarcasm. Most salespeople who broadcast the stories of their rude customers hope to shame others into acting better, says retail veteran Norm Feuti, who spent 15 years working as a manager at a host of stores. Instead of blogging or just complaining, Feuti created a comic strip, Retail, now syndicated in 43 newspapers, depicting the staff at the fictional department store Grumbel's. Feuti is an equal-opportunity scold. His strip features not just the customers chatting on their cell phones in the checkout line but also the clerks who work only for the employee discount...
