...When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder is an orgy for masochists. For two hours the audience is trapped with a collection of loathsome people who take turns showering one another with verbal and physical abuse. It would be nice to say that there is some brilliant point to the repulsive goings-on, but none ever presents itself...
...rock are obvious and there is little pretension in the album's music or the P.R. about the extent of their debt. Numbers like "Down South Jukin," "Preacher's Daughter" and "Lend a Helpin' Hand" would not have been written if the Rolling Stones and Cream had never recorded. "Comin' Home" owes its existence in part to the early Allman Brothers, the group that Skynyrd always played second Les Paul to until just before the end. And thrown in for filler are two songs by then drummer and vocalist Rickey Medlocke which are so un-Skynyrd-like in their flutey...
...WALK into the Loeb Ex before the beginning of When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder?, you are confronted by a reconstruction of a sleazy small-town diner and an actor dressed in greaser attire with a tattoo that says "Born Dead" on his arm smoking a cigarette as if it were a joint. Somehow it seems like a good time to go home and watch George Scott ground into double plays...
