...Republicans and Democrats both fear the lurking fraud monster, it could exist in reality only if they jointly created it, since each party's monster is a direct response to the anticipated actions of the other. Republicans think the Democrats--aided by ACORN, the AFL-CIO, organized crime, the Comintern and the New York Times--are going to stuff every urban ballot box from Miami to Chicago with fraudulent ballots cast by phony, made-up repeat voters. The Democrats fear that the Republicans--aided by the League of Snarling 'n' Sweaty Southern Sheriffs, Wal-Mart, Fox News, Dick Cheney...

...thrills to something called the Odic force, "power rays" that flow from healthy bodies. He invokes Einstein's mathematics to justify his own mystical yearnings and "inner vibrations." He attempts to cross socialism with Darwin. He sees Jews as both "economic liberalists" and the organizers of the Soviet Comintern. Then, without a hint of irony or self-doubt, he projects his own faults on intellectuals: "seldom more than a bunch of diseased brains who toss scraps of disconnected and purely synthetically amassed knowledge in dialectically exaggerated and overly subtle formulations back and forth to each other...

The Civil War was a microcosm of the failure of the Soviet state to follow through Mars's call for the uniting of the world's workers. Unfortunately, Carr Shows only a little sympathy for the Trotskyites forces who refused to see the necessary distinction between the progression of socialism and the defeat of Fascism. His argument implies the moral failure of any reasonably strategic socialist country, and this reflects...
