John Porcellino creates some of the most thoughtful, intelligent, sympathetic and, yes, beautiful comix in America. Good luck finding them. His "King-Cat Comics and Stories," has been around since 1989, but remains a photocopied, hand-stapled minicomic available only by mail or in the most extremely discerning comic/alternate media shops. Or so I thought. It turns out there are two high-quality, book-length collections of his work, both of which the TIME.comix staff happened to stumble upon this past week. "King-Cat Collection," (26pg; $5.95) published by B.u.L.b Comix of Switzerland, first appeared in 1998 and was just...
...Simplicity best describes everything about Porcellino's work, including the drawings. Along several other "comix brut" artists like Tom Hart, Jon Lewis, and James Kochalka, Porcellino eschews finely shaded, meticulously detailed, or even accurate drawings in favor of a raw, "unprofessional" look. One panel of "King-Cat Collection" shows a woman stroking the top of a blob. A little flag points to it and reads, "a horse." Cars have only two wheels and look squashed flat. He draws only the outlines of things, and as little as he can get away with to identify the who and where...
...Comics had a code name for their "Bizarro Comics" project, it should have been "Faust." This deluxe, hardcover book brings together many of alterna-comix best talents to write and draw stories using the many superheroes, like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, owned by mainstream behemoth DC (owned by AOL Time Warner, the same parent company as this website.) Would there be a price to pay for playing with the big, bad money? Sure enough, a whiff of sulfur may fill your nostrils as you plunk down your...
...these artists pay a price for their souls? Perhaps. At least one work was rejected for content - the original cover by Dan Clowes, creator of "Eightball" and easily one of America's top five comix makers. It cost DC plenty to reject it, not only the kill-fee to Clowes, who said he would be "happy" to provide "inflammatory quotes," for this piece, but also the book's original designer, Chip Kidd, who quit in protest. One of America's top book designers, Kidd has said he would be "loathe" to work for DC's comics division ever again...
...There are no fistfights or wisecracks or oddball events or wacky characters. While it could have collapsed under the weight of pretentiousness, it has such solid supports of narrative technique, design and artfulness as to let you walk right in. Tom Galambos has succeeded in producing a meaningful, thoughtful comix work without a hint of irony. Go sit by yourself somewhere and read...
