It is an “autobiographical documentary” about the world of high fashion, of glitzy entertainment, of celebrity—essentially of people who create and inhabit sublime artificial realities. Bright colors, strange costumes and set pieces command its filmic landscape. Fabulous and freakish personalities float past the lens. We lucky spectators get nice heaping eyefuls of homoerotic icons, fashion designers, super athletes, bright shining Stars, surfer dudes, tragically hip youth, quadriplegic artists. Everything is ready for its close-up; everything is so chock full of life...
...tapestries of melody and the human voice: sweet guitars, soaring strings, flutes and whistles, tinkling piano keys, sung choruses, beatbox, random chatter. Their incredible prowess at arranging complex layers of unorthodox and delightful sound-bites with satisfying house and breakbeats amounts to amazingly compelling dance music. With a better command of both funk and melody than your average Tall Paul van Oakendyk, one wishes the Avalanches would take over Ibiza with an army of dusty records and their brand of sun-drenched bliss...

Gray deftly uses his steely and expressive baritone to give life to a character who is desire incarnate. Strutting, preening, cajoling, even begging, he radiates charisma, as well as a sad sort of desperation that the character is unaware he possesses. A lesser actor might be inclined to soften the character and play him as a pimp with a heart of gold. Gray, though, avoids all of the character’s traps, forging ahead...
