...Frugal Life I commend Nancy Gibbs for using her column to state what we are unlikely to hear from any elected official: that thrift is an important virtue and that our failure to practice it has helped bring on the current economic collapse [Oct. 13]. Those who lived through the Great Depression endured a scare that prompted them to scrimp and save, something the current generation does not do. Now Americans generally believe they are entitled to whatever they want without regard to whether they can afford it. The list of what we have come to consider necessities would stun...

There's something touching about a man who spent his life defying laws now wanting to write them. Dr. Death has little to commend him to voters except not being a career politician, but in this season that might count for something. Approval of Congress has sunk to a record low: 9% of people in a Rasmussen poll think...

Obesity As a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant to the Cartoon Network, I commend you on your coverage of the epidemic of obesity facing American children, as well as its impact on parents and teachers [June 23]. You highlighted what I consider to be a main culprit in this dilemma: portion distortion. Instead of attempting to impose restrictions, if the hypothetical "bite diet" were followed - cut off a bite of each food on your plate (except vegetables) - people would significantly reduce calories without deprivation or reducing taste. Small steps produce big results. Bonnie Taub-Dix, Woodmere, New York...
...Harvard on track to being climate-neutral by 2036, as a plan to ensure that Harvard make up for its greenhouse gas emissions is a vital part of being sustainable. Such a move will hopefully prompt other schools to work towards the goal of climate neutrality as well. We commend the University for its impressive showing on the report. But as the Institute’s policy of not awarding “A” grades shows, there is always room for improvement, and we encourage Harvard to be a trailblazer in environmental policy. As Harvard heads into...
