...would like to commend Arab columnist Hazem Saghiyeh for his commentary "It's Not All America's Fault" [VIEWPOINT, Oct. 15]. Saghiyeh wrote that the Arab world has a "certain fixation on the past" and has not established the free press, trade unions and civil society necessary for debating matters related to the common good. Nor have we resolved the question of political legitimacy. We in the Arab world seem unable to fathom the principle that charity starts at home. Unrest is never our fault. ...They're glamorous. They're gorgeous. They're alarmingly big-breasted. They're the Kano sisters -- two women who rule the celebrity circuit in Japan, with seemingly little else to commend them but their traffic-stopping looks. We had hoped that other councillors would have done the same...

But there is a sad superficiality to these commendations. For, at the same time that America calls on the world to ardently preserve our sacred values, it must live up to a shameful history of having so rarely stood up for those values itself...
...commend The Crimson for its well-reasoned criticism of last Thursday’s peace rally organized by the Harvard Initiative for Peace and Justice (HIPJ) (Opinion, “We All Want Peace,” Sept...
