...commend you for your report on phobias [SCIENCE, April 2]. I have four of them--fear of bridges, heights, clowns and crickets. Your story adequately covered the topic and the feelings of those of us who have phobias, but I was disappointed by the large pictures of the clown, the chicken and the claustrophobic person. For those of us who fear clowns or chickens, the pictures made it very difficult to read your story. JESS MOLOUGHNEY Macon...
...strongly commend Harvard for its participation in a $23 million effort to expand afterschool programs for the children of Boston. The Boston After School For All Partnership brings the University together with 11 other donors to improve and expand opportunities for Boston's youth. Though likely motivated by its desire to stay on good terms with its neighbors, Not only will Harvard's $5 million contribution help Harvard's public relations, it will also help thousands of Boston schoolchildren to enjoy quality afterschool activities that their school districts would otherwise be unable to afford. Afterschool activities contribute immensely...
...commend the Crimson for its apology in regard to Justin G. Fong's article. "The Invasian" was not responsible journalism, but The Crimson has shown itself to be a responsible institution in apologizing. The Crimson did not apologize for offending readers. Instead, it apologized for publishing a piece that did not adhere to its standards...

Thank you for making that appeal. But as critical as outside help is, especially for the millions of victims, the even greater responsibility lies within Africa to teach, preach and practice safe sex. Unless...
...commend TIME for its efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and for the message that it's never too late to start caring for body and mind. The cover of this issue, however, seemed at odds with these positive messages. Smoking and drinking, it claims, are "fun," while the sweat suit-clad "healthier" alternative is not. That dichotomy undermines TIME's message by perpetuating questionable ideas of recreation. We can all be pleased that there are ways to "undo the damage" that causes heart disease, cancer and diabetes. But a medical focus should not blind us to other social problems. Your...
