AMERICA HURRAH, by Jean-Claude van Itallie, erupts on the theatrical landscape, pouring a lava of satire, comment and invective over some questionable aspects of modern life. Three playlets, Interview, TV and Motel, are inventively directed by Jacques Levy and Joseph Chaikin and interpreted by a flawless cast...
Though these gentlemen inveigh against "sloppy use of terminology," they make supposedly meaningful distinctions between three political positions of the thirties, i.e., Communists, anti-Communists, and anti-anti-Communists. While ignoring the total superficiality of this approach as not needing any serious comment, I might suggest that to maintain that these divisions exist "virtually the same way today" is an open admission of the bankruptcy of their political analysis. Surely they must recognize, if only privately, that the political arena has substantially changed in both content and style during the last ten years. It may be that organizations such...
...something he sincerely believes and upholds. He often prays and fasts before making important decisions--like whether to run for office. A devout Mormon, he abstains from alcohol, tobacco, and coffee. ...brief trip to Vietnam two years ago did nothing to clarify his viewpoint, and he now plans another trip "to take a fresh look." His statements on Vietnam last year were so confusing that he now refrains from commenting, except to say that the U.S. should have taken a longer, harder look before becoming involved; that there are many aspects, including the historical and tactical ones; that he will thoroughly study the situation and voice his opinions at the proper time; that as one who has made no mistakes there, he does not have anything to defend in connection with...
Senior Common rooms are essentially associations of faculty members who have an interest in undergraduates; hence appropriate topics for discussion and comment by them include any issues which affect undergraduates. The participation of Harvard students in a selective service system through which they benefit from an inequitable distribution of the burden of military service is certainly an issue. It is not, of course, a typical topic for discussion in senior common rooms (as is, for example, the propriety of mini-skirts in house dining halls). Our hope in discussing the issue of deferments and passing the resolution was to suggest...
