...traumas often veer toward the neo-Gothic, with social secretaries replacing spinster govenesses, and gay cousins occupying closets that mad old women once inhabited. Auchincloss also occasionally mires himself in melodramatic ramblings that he evidently perceives as powerful prose ("Orgasm with David was like the raising of a communion cup before an altar that knew no sacrament but love.") but these indulgent tirades are only sporadic; Auchincloss is generally a smooth and vivid writer...

...tracing the origins of the President's views, the same historian described him as a middle-class Southern boy who had deep religious feeling, a romantic view of knowledge and intense ambition. Once he had wept when he listened to a Communion hymn. He read Scripture and prayed daily. The President was convinced that God was accessible, both through prayer and in His revealed word, which provided both strength and comfort. If enough additional bishops endorse the change in a mail ballot, the proposal will go to the Vatican for final approval. Many conservatives are deeply upset about the new practice, which they consider irreverent. John Cardinal Carberry of St. Louis even warned that wafers might be taken and used in satanic masses...
