...Silverman's blog is more than just a list of funny bloopers. It also recounts several egregious plagiarism cases, including one in which a Canadian newspaper fabricated an entire story about Prime Minister Stephen Harper, claiming that he pocketed a communion wafer instead of ingesting it during a church communion. "Wafergate" never happened, and the story included quotes supposedly uttered by prominent officials that were completely fabricated. Whoops. Hopefully this buys us a little leeway: the next time we screw up, just remember that others have done worse...

...feud has erupted between U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy and Bishop Thomas Tobin, Rhode Island's top Catholic leader, over whether the pro-choice lawmaker should be allowed to receive Communion. On Nov. 20, the son of the late Ted Kennedy told the Providence Journal that Tobin had ordered him not to partake of the sacrament--an accusation the bishop later denied, saying it had been merely a request. The spat is the latest between Tobin and Kennedy, who sparred in October after Kennedy criticized church leaders for supporting the veto of a health care bill unless it included restrictions...

Like many of Western civilization's finest achievements, the long and scrumptious history of waffles can be traced to ancient Greece, when Athenians cooked obelios - flat cakes between two metal plates - over burning embers. The word waffle is related to wafer, as in the communion wafer - one of the only victuals that early Catholics could eat during fasting periods since wafers didn't contain animal fats, eggs or dairy products.
