...bishop of Providence -said something pointed enough to be heard in Rome. In a letter sent to his bishop and all the priests of his diocese, Kelly announced that he had developed an "abiding sense of frustration" with the majority of his fellow bishops, who "are more concerned with Communion in the hand than the war in Viet Nam." He was therefore resigning from the active ministry in protest, he said, though technically he remains both priest and bishop until he requests formal laicization...
...considering the postal rates of 1792, when it cost an uninflated 22? to have a coachman carry a one-page folded message a distance of 450 miles. The once flourishing tradition of personal correspondence has faded in the U.S. For years, Americans have tended to favor the more direct communion of telephone wires. Given the condition of telephone service in some parts of the country, however, it may be safe to predict a small renaissance of letter writing in America, even at the higher prices. Of course, if the postal service does not improve either, there might be an instauration...
...this makes contemporary farming something more than a bucolic communion of man, plow and earth. Says Erv: "A farmer these days has to be a good buyer and seller-that's the important thing. Not long ago, for example, he tossed his wallet onto the Communion table and offered to bet $1,000 that nobody in the congregation could prove to him that it was wrong to drink whisky or sleep with women (no takers). Powell's consistent absenteeism in favor of relaxing at his Bahamian home in Bimini also cushioned the blow. Said...
...thing, sure, but it's also more than that. Rags's call to revolution is really more of a nostalgic attempt to return to the nineteenth century. It's a clarion call reverberating with notes of simplistic iconoclasm, Emersonian self-reliance, a Thoreauvian communion with the land, and, ironically enough, a championship of the small businessman. Spelt out in those terms, it's just not that revolutionary. More like Consciousness I in bell-bottoms. Which means that where Rags is at may be just about midway between the late Herbert Hoover and the early Yves St. Laurent...
