Before I heard the rebroadcast of the speech by radio host Don Imus at the Radio & TV Correspondents' Dinner in Washington [NOTEBOOK, April 1], but after I observed the negative media and political reaction, I concluded that the I-Man, my daily radio companion during my commute, had gone too far. After listening to a replay of his entire speech, however, I recommend that Imus be the required speaker at the event every year. Then, perhaps, media personalities and politicians at risk of exposure to his "aggressive" humor would take themselves less seriously and take the responsibilities of their public...
...Close Shave, which would make a fine companion piece to Babe, is a dazzly melodrama about criminal woolgathering and an adorable lamb named Sean (as in shorn). Its blithe originality suggests that Park could make terrific Wallace-and-Gromit films forever. But he already has a feature-length project on a new subject. Park is right to think big. In a year or two, he could be holding an Oscar for best picture...
...campus completely safe. One of the most significant precautions students can take is to avoid walking alone after dark. We realize that this is difficult for students with busy schedules, who often have organization meetings, study sessions or rehearsals until late at night. So are the twistings of that frosty, flabbergastingly flat accent as heard on the Minnesota-based Mystery Science Theater 3000. Two other gifted natives, the filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, have apparently never got over the giggle value of their regional dialect. Fargo, their derisive new true-crime comedy, could be subtitled How to Laugh at People Who Talk Minnesotan...
...Romeo and Juliet plot about two young lovers and their opposing families, one gay, one straight--will challenge a few prejudices. For a start, it's funny, with two of the world's most gifted comics, Lane and Williams, as the drag queen and his slightly more butch companion. Lane is wildly endearing: a tempestuous wife, a doting mother and every inch the great lady. The film gets less comic mileage, but more political kick, from the right-wing politician (Hackman) who is the butt of the film's genial jokes. He might be Pat Robertson or Pat Buchanan...
