There's no way of knowing how many companion animals were left behind when Hurricane Katrina forced the evacuation of New Orleans. The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which operates the city's animal shelter, estimates that 70,000 pets remained in the city during the storm; of those, about 15,000 were rescued.
