...John Cheever and Bernard Malamud have collections of short stories, both domestic, the one (The World of Apples) waspish and suburban, the other (Rembrandt's Hat) Jewish and urban. Evan S. Connell Jr., once more roving far from the Bridges of Kansas City, has produced Points for a Compass Rose, a poetic meditation upon the pain and perplexity of life, with instances taken from history and myth...
Later, Geller caused a nearby compass needle to turn about five degrees. Lawrence, noting that Geller had moved his body and vibrated the floor, did the same, causing the needle to deflect even more. Geller, startled, accused Lawrence of using trickery, and Targ insisted on examining the DOD man to see if he had magnets hidden in his clothing. (He did not.) On the seventh day, however, using the plane's compass, Canessa and Parrado managed to reach the Azufre River and sighted a shepherd and his flock. It was five days before Christmas...
Adiv, however, had grown up in a kibbutz composed of dedicated socialists, and for some reason had plunged deeper and deeper into radical politics. First, Adiv became a member of the Israel Socialist Union, generally called Matzpen (Compass) after its publication. The group is revolutionary socialist and condemns Jewish colonialists for seizing all of Palestine from the Arabs. Two years ago, Adiv formed the Revolutionary Communist Alliance-Red Front, which has world revolution as an ill-defined goal, and enrolled a dozen members. Among them were Dan Vered, 28, a fellow Sabra and a high school math teacher...
