...Ayckbourn's greatest feat, really--may be why his work has got short shrift in America. Early in his career, after such West End (and occasional Broadway) successes as Absurd Person Singular, Ayckbourn was labeled, patronizingly, the "British Neil Simon." But as his plays have grown darker and more complex, Broadway has largely abandoned him. Although Communicating Doors, one of his lesser comedies, had a successful run off-Broadway a couple of seasons back and Comic Potential, his latest West End hit, will be produced this fall by the Manhattan Theatre Club, most of Ayckbourn's great comedies...

...things stopped the panic. One was Paulson's move to guarantee the money market funds with a special hoard of Treasury money usually reserved for stabilizing the dollar against other currencies. The other was the announcement Thursday night of the plan to lift the bad loans (and the myriad complex assets made up of them) out of the system and put them, at least temporarily, on the taxpayers' balance sheet. If the deal falls through, the panic will almost surely begin again...

...demanded access to the footage, even as he conceded that since the lighting was poor, the carabinieri could arrive at a "different interpretation" of what the camera showed the two men doing. Currently it's a moot point, since the prosecuting magistrate has ruled the footage as too "complex" to be judicially relevant...
