After all the coverage of last March's Alaska oil spill, was there anything left to report? Nation editor Jack E. White figured there was. In the Los Angeles bureau, Brown pored over National Transportation Safety Board reports and testimony by tanker crew members and others to unravel the complex chain of events. Then he went back to Valdez to talk with Coast Guard investigators. Says Brown: "I found the web of culpability surrounding the accident was almost as sticky and far-reaching as the spill itself." Meanwhile, New York correspondent Behar, who wrote the story, interviewed Hazelwood's family...

...reaching an almost unequivocal decision in the complex case, Allen dismissed a key Paramount claim, that Time's directors had put the company up for sale in March when they originally agreed to acquire Warner. If that had been found to be true, Time would have been obligated under Delaware law to seek the maximum immediate return to shareholders by auctioning the company to the highest bidder. Those novels painted likeable, complex charcters, but Summer People offers only shadows of real people, moving in patterns too familiar to be truly interesting...

While international comparisons are difficult because the varying stigmas attached to suicide produce under-reporting in certain countries, one point is unchallenged: the U.S. leads the world in gun use for self-inflicted deaths. In 1986, 7.5 people per 100,000 in the U.S. used firearms to kill themselves; Switzerland was second with 6, followed by France with 4.9 and Canada with...

...Monday, June 26th, a "contract" was presented to Union membership to consider and vote on three days later. This document was an interpretive summary of good faith agreements between University and union negotiators regulating eight complex areas of management and staff interaction and legally binding for three years. It contained optimistic figures and best-case scenarios on pensions and salaries, and much vague language in the crucial areas of health and safety, affirmative action and family policy...
