...blast that destroyed the Oklahoma City federal building. Since that day, he has collected what he believes are leads abandoned by government investigators, hoping a grand jury will be impaneled to probe further. "All roads to Oklahoma City lead to Elohim City," says Wilburn, referring to a white-supremacist compound in the eastern part of the state. A telephone record he has collected (it was made public by the government) shows McVeigh calling Elohim City two weeks before the bombing. Although he offers no hard evidence, Wilburn contends that McVeigh had visited the camp between June 1993 and the bombing...

BERKELEY, California: Researchers in California report they have developed a new chemical compound that could one day treat flu infections by blocking an enzyme, called neuramindase, that the virus needs in order to reproduce. Early tests of the experimental GS 4104 compound have produced better-than-expected results by knocking out samples of all major flu types in five different species of lab animals, according to a report in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. GS 4104 contains the infection by preventing newly-formed viruses from leaving the host cell. But don't expect...

LIMA, Peru: The relentless taunting of rebels by Peruvian police continues to edge toward conflagration. Five times Monday, as Peruvian war marches blared from speakers mounted high near the compound walls, black-bereted commandos staged elaborate maneuvers underneath. Armored personnel carried rolled by, and as always, all gun barrels were trained ominously on the residence. Japan's permission is needed for any attack on the compound. But Tokyo worries where the steadily intensifying displays will lead. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto had asked the Peruvian government "not to go too far. Not thinking of the hostages' mental...

...archbishop Juan Luis Cipriani visited the residence Wednesday, raising hopes that talks to free the 73 hostages might begin. Trouble is, the rebels insist that freeing the prisoners be a condition of any hostage release. In recent days, police have thrown trash and stones over the wall of the compound and made obscene gestures toward rebels visible in its windows. The captors have responded in kind with intermittent machine-gun fire, apparently warning off the police. So far, no one has been injured. Blaring rock music might be a safer alternative...

...after Microsoft became successful, Gates built a four-house vacation compound dubbed Gateaway for his family. There his parents would help him replicate his summer activities on a grander scale for dozens of friends and co-workers in what became known as the Microgames. "There were always a couple of mental games as well as performances and regular games," says Bill Sr. as he flips through a scrapbook. These were no ordinary picnics: one digital version of charades, for example, had teams competing to send numerical messages using smoke-signal machines, in which the winners devised their...
