...public alike. Many within the movement apply relentless pressure to stockholders, suppliers and other business contacts, and some - a small substratum - believe that a proper response to violence against animals is violence against humans. Much of their fury has been directed at the occupants of a sprawling, quiet compound that sits behind black iron gates and a fence topped with coiled razor wire near the Cambridgeshire village of Alconbury. Inside the fence, a sign reads: working for a better future. This is Huntingdon Life Sciences, which tests new compounds for the pharmaceutical, agrochemical and biotechnology industries. Defended by many...
...general, stepped across the narrow street from her husband's office to pick up milk for his coffee. She paused to chat with the shop owner as a green catering van sped up the narrow street, smashed into tall wrought-iron gates at the corner of the walled consulate compound and blew...
...season. Fearing the campaign was not over, London and Washington issued broad warnings of possible imminent attacks against British and American interests abroad. In Muslim countries, the chosen targets have symbolized mainly Western and Jewish interests--Jakarta's J.W. Marriott Hotel, Casablanca's tourist sites and Jewish centers, residential compounds for foreign workers in Riyadh, Istanbul's synagogues and British offices. ...resignation. Escorted to safety by police, he declared a state of emergency and placed the military and security forces on high alert. Shevardnadze accused his opponents of mounting a coup - a charge Saakashvili denied. But late Saturday night, many of his supporters remained inside the parliament building. To compound the confusion, another opposition leader, former Speaker Nino Burjanadze, appeared to proclaim herself interim president, thanking the police and military for "keeping out of the fight." The largely autonomous region of Ajaria began urgent consultations with two long-estranged provinces, heightening fears of a breakup of the country. Shevardnadze, meanwhile, rejected...
...thought brown was the proverbial new black, think again. Researchers at the National Physical Laboratory in Britain have developed a nickel-phosphorus compound called NPL Super Black that absorbs 99.65% of visible light. Black paint absorbs only about 97.5% of visible light--positively shiny by comparison. Not just cool, the new black is useful too. Precision optical instruments depend on eliminating any and all stray reflected light to get their readings. The blacker the black, the less reflected light, the better the data. That makes NPL Super Black a pretty bright idea...
