Kasparov, the world chess champion, simultaneously played seven "masters" and one computer at a Harvard tournament this weekend. And even though he had only 15 minutes to devote to each game, he defeated them all.
The two computer opponents, Sargon 4 and Deep Thought, should not pose too much difficulty for the Soviet champ. The reason Kasparov made this tour of the U.S. was to face Deep Thought, acclaimed as toughest chess computer opponent ever devised.
Accessories Plus, a computer store adjacent to Pangloss, was robbed in March, said owner Chris Novosielski. Bryant L. Durrell '92, an employee of the store, said that robber also claimed to have a gun under his jacket, but Durrell doubted the robbers were the same man.
In New York, the man who has accumulated thehighest chess ranking ever twice beat "DeepThought," ballyhooed as the world's most powerfulchess-playing computer. Kasparov said that he didnot fear machines' entry into the chess world.
"It's very good for chess," he said, "althoughI hope the computer will never beat the worldchampion."
